I’m not one of those people who wakes up excited to work out. I like it once I’m there, and I like how I feel after, but getting myself to actually go can be a bit of a battle some days.
There are mornings where I’m fine, I just get on with it. And then there are days where I stand there thinking of every excuse possible. I’ll go later, I’m too tired, I’ve got too much to do… it’s always something.
And this might sound a bit random, but one thing that’s made it easier is what I wear.
Not in a “I need a cute gym outfit” way. Just in a really basic, practical way that takes away one more reason to not bother.
When You Open Your Drawer and Lose Motivation
I didn’t realise how much this was affecting me until I noticed the pattern.
I’d plan to work out, go to get changed, and then just feel instantly put off. Nothing dramatic, just little things. A top that didn’t feel right, something too tight, something that would annoy me as soon as I started moving.
And instead of finding something else, I’d just think, I’ll leave it for today.
That was usually the end of it.
Now I keep a few gym shirts that I know I’ll actually wear. They’re comfortable, they fit properly, and I don’t have to stand there second guessing it.
It’s such a small change, but it makes getting started feel easier.
You Feel It the Whole Time If It’s Not Right
I used to think gym clothes didn’t really matter as long as they technically fit.
But when something’s off, you notice it constantly. If it’s too tight, you feel restricted. If it rides up, you’re pulling at it. If it just doesn’t sit right, it’s all you can think about.
And when you already weren’t that motivated to begin with, that’s enough to ruin the whole thing.
When something fits properly, you forget about it. You just get on with your workout without thinking about what you’re wearing.
That’s how it should be.
Feeling Like Yourself Makes a Difference
I’m not talking about dressing up or trying to look a certain way. Just feeling comfortable and like yourself.
If I throw something on that doesn’t feel right, I notice I’m more self-aware. A bit awkward, a bit distracted.
But when I feel comfortable, I don’t think about it. I just focus on what I’m doing.
That’s probably why I’ve ended up liking things with a bit more personality, like women printed gym shirts. It just makes it feel less boring. Less like something I’m forcing myself to do.
No One Is Paying as Much Attention as You Think
This is something I had to remind myself of.
When you feel a bit unsure, it’s easy to think everyone’s noticing what you’re wearing or what you’re doing. But they’re not.
Most people are just focused on their own workout, trying to get through it like everyone else.
So wearing something you feel good in isn’t about anyone else. It just means you’re not distracted or uncomfortable while you’re there.
And that helps more than you’d think.
It’s Usually the Small Things
I used to think being consistent was all about motivation. Like one day you just become that person who sticks to it no matter what.
But it’s not really like that.
It’s more about making things easier where you can. Having clothes ready. Not overthinking it. Removing those little barriers that give you an excuse to skip it.
Some days you still won’t feel like going. That doesn’t change.
But it does make it easier to say, “I’ll just go for a bit,” instead of not going at all.
Just Make It Easier on Yourself
There’s no perfect routine, and definitely no perfect outfit.
But if getting changed is already putting you off, it’s worth sorting that part out.
Find a few things you actually like wearing. Things that feel comfortable and don’t make you think twice.
Because sometimes it’s not about motivation or discipline. It’s just about making things simple enough that you actually show up.
