Before you start working in one of these roles though, you’ll need to get a relevant qualification that’s recognised by the Financial Conduct Authority. One such qualification is the Certificate in Mortgage Advice and Practice (CeMAP).

Who is it aimed at?
As training experts Simply Academy highlight, the CeMAP qualification is aimed at anyone who’s interested in a career as a mortgage adviser. It can pave the way for you to work in brokerages, building societies, banks and estate agencies, or as an independent self-employed adviser. You don’t need any formal qualifications in order to enroll on the course, but you must be at least 17 years old and you should have a good level of maths and English. It’s also important that you have access to a computer and the internet.
What topics does it cover?
The qualification is made up of seven units, each of which is compulsory. These are assessed in three modules. The first module provides an introduction to the financial services environment and to the products available, and it also looks at the regulations in place in the sector. The second focuses on mortgage law, policy, practice and markets, as well as other topics including mortgage applications, payment methods, arrears and post completion issues. The last module is based on an assessment of mortgage advice and knowledge.
As the course progresses, you can expect to get an increasingly detailed picture of mortgage advice, building the knowledge and skills you’ll need to advise clients once you qualify.
How can you study for it?
There are different ways to study for a CeMAP. If you like classroom-based learning and you’re able to fit this into your schedule, you can opt for a fast track course that takes just 10 days. Alternatively, if you’d prefer a more flexible path that enables you to fit your studies around existing commitments, you can choose to complete the qualification as a distance learning course. You’ll get access to the same study materials as you would in the classroom, but you can work through them at a time and place that suits you.
